Multi-Color Corporation North America Wine and Spirits was the winner of the prestigious Best in Show award at the 2019 TLMI Label Awards competition. The converter earned the top honor for its Prayers of Sinners entry in the category Offset – Wine & Spirits – Color Process – Prime. To complete this stunning label, Multi-Color Corporation North America Wine and Spirits needed to overcome printing challenges on the lower half of the label. The label, which activates well with 365nm lights, offers a glow-in-the-dark skeleton graphic. The dark skeleton was applied inline under the CMYK graphic. In addition to Best in Show, the Prayers of Sinners label won Best in Class in its category. Including Prayers of Sinners, there were six other Best in Class winners. For 2019, Best in Class winners are Labeltronix, McDowell Label & Screen Printing, Multi-Color Corporation Mexico, Multi-Color Corporation North America Wine and Spirits, Syracuse Label & Surround Printing, and Yerecic Label. The TLMI Annual Awards competition aims to stimulate innovative printing and recognizes technical achievement in all areas of the narrow web industry, including tags and labels, cartons, flexible packaging, nonwoven pressure sensitive products and more. The competition recognizes and honors the finest efforts of the association’s converter members throughout the previous 12-month period. Best in Show Best in Class Multi-Color Corporation North America Wine and Spirits CATEGORY: Offset – Wine & Spirits – Color Process – Prime ENTRY: Prayers of Sinners SPECIAL CHALLENGES: The majority of the lower half of the label presented the biggest challenge. The other silkscreen is actually a glow-in-the-dark skeleton applied inline under the CMYK graphic. You can see the skeleton graphic underneath glow in a dark room, and it also activates well with 365nm black lights. KEY SUPPLIERS: Nilpeter, Agfa, Stork, Harper, Kocher+Beck, Avery Dennison, Siegwerk, CTI Best in Class First Place McDowell Label & Screen Printing CATEGORY: Multi-Process – Pressure Sensitive – Excludes Wine & Spirits – Color Process – Prime ENTRY: Athena SPECIAL CHALLENGES: The most detailed and exceptionally tight registration of the 4-color process image (and the associated fine screen-tones) to the use of brand-specific spot colors provided a challenge. In addition, the rotary screen printing, the tactile doming features, and the combination patterned varnishes create a highly-augmented label that emits different visible features pending the angle of light refraction and consumer engagement. The net result is an exceptionally executed, complex label design. KEY SUPPLIERS: Gallus, DuPont, RotoMetrics, Harper, UPM Raflatac, Actega Best in Class First Place Labeltronix CATEGORY: Flexography – Excludes Wine & Spirits – Color Process – Prime ENTRY: Copper Wings IPA SPECIAL CHALLENGES: Textured material made it challenging to print clean, 4-color process work. KEY SUPPLIERS: Nilpeter, Kodak, Deco Technology, Harper, RotoMetrics, Wausau Coated Products, Siegwerk Best in Class First place Multi-Color Corporation North America Wine and Spirits CATEGORY: Flexography or Letterpress – Wine & Spirits – Color Process – Prime ENTRY: Freakshow Chardonnay SPECIAL CHALLENGES: This complex and detailed CMYK image had to use 200 lpi HD flexo to achieve sharp results. Cold foil, spot matte/gloss varnishes, and rotary embossing were all used to achieve dimensional looks. The label was printed all in one pass on a 20″ web. KEY SUPPLIERS: Gallus, DuPont, RotoMetrics, Harper, Kocher+Beck, Avery Dennison, Siegwerk, Infinity Cold Foil Best in Class First Place Multi-Color Corporation Mexico CATEGORY: Digital – Toner – Wine & Spirits -– Color Process – Prime ENTRY: Mi Campo SPECIAL CHALLENGES: This complex label incorporated digital printing, embossing sculpture, and screen varnish. Challenges emerged in controlling color and register. KEY SUPPLIERS: HP Indigo, DuPont, Harper, RotoMetrics, Wausau Coated Products, Siegwerk Best in Class First Place Yerecic Label CATEGORY: Coupon or Expanded Information Label ENTRY: Explore the Flavors of Chef Curtis Stone SPECIAL CHALLENGES: The back of the overlam is printed with two colors and then turned over to print 4-color process on the face. The underlam is printed with 4-color process and the two webs are laminated together with an adhesive. A second adhesive is applied for a stop to keep the layers from coming apart. Keeping the 4-color process on the underlam in registration with the face of the label can be difficult. KEY SUPPLIERS: Mark Andy, DuPont, RotoMetrics, Harper, Green Bay Packaging, Flint Group, Siegwerk, acpo Best in Class First Place Syracuse Label & Surround Printing CATEGORY: Roll to Roll – Includes Shrink Sleeve – Single Printing Method – Color Process – Prime ENTRY: Gruvee SPECIAL CHALLENGES: This project required nine colors, a dual image and called out transparent and opaque elements mixed throughout the graphics. In order to complete this sleeve, SLSP had to implement a sandwich printing technique on its flexo press to create its reflecting image with the customer’s desired opacity. KEY SUPPLIERS: Nilpeter, DuPont, Bonset, Actega First Place Repacorp CATEGORY: Digital – Toner – Wine & Spirits – Color Process – Non-Prime ENTRY: Private First Class SPECIAL CHALLENGES: A barrier opaque enough was needed so that the other layer of print was not visible. Repacorp was able to use multiple colors to create a barrier between the two process prints to eliminate that issue. It also had to play with the contrast of the image to properly be viewed through the spirits. KEY SUPPLIERS: HP, Spartanics, Avery Dennison First Place Schreiner Group LP CATEGORY: Flexography – Excludes Wine & Spirits – Line – Non-Prime ENTRY: McKenzie Bottle in Bond Bourbon Whiskey SPECIAL CHALLENGES: The complexity of design required intricate hot stamping, raised varnish and embossing. The unique label shape caused challenges in diecutting and stripping, all done inline. KEY SUPPLIERS: Gallus, Kodak, Kocher+Beck, Harper, Northern Graphics, UPM Raflatac, Sun Chemical First Place Luminer Converting Group CATEGORY: Tag – Industrial and/or Systems ENTRY: Hema Screen Fecal Occult Blood Test Card SPECIAL CHALLENGES: Keeping the diecut windows in register with the reactive customer supplied printed hema globulin paperstock posed a challenge. Ensuring clean diecutting for all features did, as well. KEY SUPPLIERS: Propheteer, Flint Group, RotoMetrics, Avery Dennison, CTS, Actega Second Place Hub Labels CATEGORY: Digital – Inkjet – Wine & Spirits – Color Process – Prime ENTRY: Blue Mountain – Sparkling Peach SPECIAL CHALLENGES: A demanding brand-image-conscious company was looking for short-run digital labels to promote specialty wine. The use of foil was needed to accent the company logo by overprinting in order to show definition for eye-catching results. Additionally, printing on a soft feel overlam was required to also achieve soft peach simulation. Clear text on reverse print was also an area of concern for the client. KEY SUPPLIERS: Gallus, DuPont, Harper, RotoMetrics, UPM Raflatac, acpo Second Place Creative Labels of Vermont (CLOV) CATEGORY: Digital – Toner – Wine & Spirits – Color Process – Non-Prime ENTRY: Amherst Farm – Winery – Chocolate – Raspberry Back SPECIAL CHALLENGES: CLOV had to match color previously run via flexo. Diecutting was also critical due to there being sets. KEY SUPPLIERS: HP Indigo, RotoMetrics, Avery Dennison, Flint Group, Multi-Plastics Second Place Outlook Group CATEGORY: Flexography – Excludes Wine & Spirits – Color – Process – Prime ENTRY: Forbidden Root Strawberry Basil SPECIAL CHALLENGES: The biggest challenge is the label has a registered screened white to allow the foil to show through. KEY SUPPLIERS: MPS, Flint Group, Harper, RotoMetrics, Avery Dennison, INX International Ink Co.
